Report Suggests UK among Europe's unhealthiest nations

The UK is one of the unhealthiest nations in Europe for some health indicators, data suggests. Figures from the Association of Public Health Observatories reveal the UK is the fattest EU member and has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies. The UK also performs badly on female cancer survival and infant deaths. But life expectancy figures in the UK are slightly better than for EU counterparts and the nation also excels at treating heart disease.  And our early action on smoking has had a very positive impact on health outcomes, the report authors say.  They compared all regions across 27 countries in Europe using 37 health indicators in 2006.

Better Heart Failure Care Demand

Nearly 5,000 lives a year could be saved if more people with heart failure got specialist care, a report suggests.

The National Heart Failure Audit found about 32% of people with heart failure died within a year of being admitted to hospital in England and Wales.

But the figure drops to 23% for those seen by a hospital cardiologist or cared for in specialist services.

This means the death toll among patients admitted to hospital could fall from 17,000 to 12,000 a year.

Heart failure affects about 900,000 people a year and occurs when the heart has trouble pumping blood around the body, often caused by heart muscle weakness.

The report, compiled by the NHS Information Centre and the British Society for Heart Failure, looked at the records of 21,000 patients

Newborn Deaths Higher In Deprived Areas

The death rate for newborn babies is more than twice as high in deprived towns compared with affluent areas, a study has found.
The main reasons for the difference were premature births and congenital defects, said University of Leicester researchers.
The British Medical Journal study looked at all neonatal deaths in England over 11 years from 1997.

Neonatal charity Bliss said key risk factors were smoking and obesity.

The Labour government pledged to reduce the gap in infant mortality between rich and poor in England and Wales by 10% by 2010, but some evidence suggests that the gap may actually have widened.

During the study period, 18,524 newborn babies died, but the researchers said that if all areas had the same mortality rates as the most affluent districts, the number would have been almost 40% lower.

When the root cause of the deaths was analysed, in four out of five cases, the death could be attributed to either a birth defect or premature delivery.

Differences in the care of women during pregnancy and birth did not appear to be a significant contributor.

Improve out-of-hours care - Royal College of Physicians

Out-of-hours patient care is suffering say doctors Continue reading the main story

Junior doctors are having to care for too many patients because there are not enough consultants on duty at weekends and in the evenings, according to the Royal College of Physicians.

The RCP says there is mounting evidence of poor out-of-hours care in hospitals.

It is calling for a consultant to be on duty for at least 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

The RCP carried out a survey of 126 hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It found that none had more than 12 hours of weekend cover from senior specialists in emergency medicine.
Just 3% provided nine to 12 hours of cover, and nearly three quarters of hospitals in the survey had no specialist cover at all.

The survey follows research published in the summer which revealed people admitted as emergencies on a weekend were more likely to die than if they were brought in during the week.
