10th - 13th November Rallyfest extravaganza comes to streets of Cardiff!

Cardiff Castle *FREE EVENT! The countdown has started to the final round of this year's World Rally Championship hitting the streets of Cardiff and forests of mid and north Wales, where one of the most closely-contested finales for years will be decided. 2011 sees Wales Rally GB take place from 10th - 13th November, bringing with it the Rallyfest celebration to Cardiff. Coupled with an autograph signing session, big screen, driver interviews and the final podium ceremony for the event on Sunday afternoon, Cardiff city centre is set for a cracker... Access to the Rallyfest extravaganza will be free to all spectators, with the event taking place around the iconic Cardiff Castle - just a short distance away from High Street and St Mary Street. And, with the streets buzzing with the seasonal excitement of Christmas just around the corner, much of the rally action will coincide with late night shopping times. Attractions inside the castle will include a big screen to watch rally action and live times, Parc Fermé on Friday and Saturday nights and the finish ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Shoppers and rally fans will also be able to get up close to the drivers, with an autograph session set to take place on Saturday night, from 7-8pm, in the castle's Interpretation Centre. There will also be stalls and other attractions just outside the castle gates throughout the course of the event. On Saturday evening, following grueling action in the forests of north and mid Wales, the battle-weary crews and cars will arrive on St Mary Street, before entering High Street. Cars will head up High Street and turn in front of the castle for some great photo opportunities. They will then make their way to Parc Fermé - the technical area (where no work on the cars is allowed) for the cars to be left overnight - in the castle grounds. Finally, the podium celebrations for the event, the culmination of an extremely close World Rally Championship, will take place in the castle grounds from three o'clock (15.07) on Sunday afternoon. You are invited to attend the Merthyr Tydfil World Mental Health Day Event 2011, which is being held on Friday 7th October at the Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre (old Rhydycar), commencing at 10.00 am and finishing after 2.30 pm.

World Mental Health Day is a global annual event aimed at raising awareness of mental health and addressing associated stigma, and at a local level Mental Health has been identified as a priority for development within the 2011- 2014 Health, Social Care & Well-Being Strategy.

The World Mental Health Day Event is a way of working collaboratively towards addressing the needs of our local communities. This day will provide opportunity for service users to engage with providers of services, and will also be a chance for local organisations and partners to showcase the quality and quantity of services available within the County Borough.

It is important for us to appropriately cater for all attendees so, if you are an organisation attending or exhibiting on the day, please complete the appropriate booking form as attached:

Police 'Ignore Hate Crimes Against Disabled'

Police are ignoring hate crimes against disabled people, according to a new report from a leading learning disability charity, Mencap.

Mencap claims disabled people are being left to suffer violence, harassment and abuse because police efforts to tackle disability hate crime are failing.

The report, Don't Stand By, says many police forces do not understand the crimes and do not have strategies in place to tackle them.

The study was carried out with the help of 14 police forces across England.

It cites examples of where low-level harassment was ignored by police and allowed to escalate into sustained abuse with fatal consequences.

Apple Tree Stores Opened in Dinas

New Horizons, Aberdare have opened a new outreach service at Apple Tree Stores on 21 March 2011. It is open from 9.00am- 4.00pm every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The project is in Dinas (by the Miners Rescue building on the A4058 Dinas Road). There is plenty of parking near by and the bus stops and Dinas train station is close by.

There is a warm welcome for anyone experiencing mental health issues at NEW HORIZONS. Apple Tree Stores offers a range of activities, access to resources, self- help groups and much more in a friendly and supportive environment. All are welcome at all time! Hospital records of violence fall further

The number of people treated in hospital after violent injury fell in England and Wales in 2010, an annual and authoritative study says.

Doctors dealt with an estimated 313,000 violent incidents, down 11% in a year, the Cardiff University study said.

But for the second year running, the figures saw an unexplained rise in the small number of young children who went to hospital after a violent injury.

The study says the overall trend in violence has now fallen for a decade.

The annual research by the university's Violence and Society Research Group tries to capture an accurate picture of violence by counting incidents recorded at 59 emergency departments or minor injury units in England and Wales.

UK stillbirth rates among highest of rich nations

Stillbirth rates in the UK are higher than in almost every other high-income country, a series of reports suggest.

The UK had about 4,100 stillbirths in 2009 and, with a rate of 3.5 per 1,000 births, was ranked 33rd in a list of 193 countries - down from 26th in 1995.

Only France and Austria ranked lower among high-income nations.

The research, in The Lancet, also points to wide regional variations - stillbirths were a third more likely in the East Midlands than the South West.

According to the Lancet's figures, the 4,100 stillbirths in the UK in 2009 equates to about 11 children still born every day.

Although stillbirth rates are actually declining - by about 17.4% between 1995 and 2009 - other countries have moved faster, the report concludes.

NHS reform: Front-line clinical jobs 'under threat'

Front-line clinical jobs in the NHS are under threat in England, a union says.

A Royal College of Nursing analysis of 21 NHS trusts where cuts were taking place found more than half of posts under threat were in areas such as nursing and midwifery.

RCN leader Peter Carter said cutting thousands of doctors and nurses could have a "catastrophic" effect on care.

But deputy prime minister Nick Clegg maintained radical reorganisation of the NHS is needed.

Money woes 'linked to rise in depression

Economic problems may be fuelling a rise in depression in England, it has been suggested.

Prescriptions for anti-depressant drugs such as Prozac rose by more than 40% over the past four years, data obtained by the BBC shows.

GPs and charities said they were being contacted increasingly by people struggling with debt and job worries.

They said financial woe could often act as a "trigger", but added other factors may also be playing a role in the rise.

The rise has happened at a time when the government has been increasing access to talking therapies, which should in theory curb the demand for anti-depressants.

In the last year alone referrals for talking therapies rose four-fold to nearly 600,000, Department of Health figures showed.

Incapacity benefit crackdown begins after pilot scheme

The one-and-a-half million people who claim incapacity benefit will start to receive letters this week asking them to be tested on their ability to work.

The new assessments are part of government plans to reduce the number of long-term claimants in a rolling programme through to 2014.

Almost 30% of those who took the test during pilot schemes in Burnley and Aberdeen were declared fit to work.

However, disability charities say many of the assessments are unfair.

Blood flow monitor 'could save NHS £400m a year'

The NHS could save £400m a year if a blood flow monitor was used more during surgery, the health watchdog says.  In its guidance for England, NICE says the device, which was developed in Britain and uses ultrasound, reduces complications and speeds up recovery.  It says the CardioQ-ODM cuts the length of time patients spend in hospital following major or high-risk surgery by an average of two days.
Use of the device saves £1,000 each time, the watchdog adds.  At present, fewer than three in 100 eligible patients are monitored using it, but NICE estimates if that figure was increased to 50 in 100 patients, it would save the NHS in England more than £400m a year.

Based on the same technology as a police speed gun, the monitor uses ultrasound to measure the rate of blood flow from the heart. The device, which has an ultrasound probe at its tip, is inserted into the oesophagus or gullet.  The signal is reflected by blood cells travelling down the aorta, which enables doctors to establish how much oxygen and nutrients are being sent to vital organs.

The monitor was pioneered at University College Hospital in London.

Doctors cause a third of stubborn high blood pressure

A third of hard-to-treat high blood pressure may actually be 'fake' and instead a patient's nervous response to being seen by a doctor, say experts.

They made the discovery when they continuously monitored the blood pressure of nearly 700,000 people as they went about their normal lives.

Some 37% of 8,295 patients thought to have stubborn or resistant hypertension actually had "white coat" hypertension.

The experts call for mandatory 24-hour checks, Hypertension journal reports.

The NHS advisory body NICE has recently proposed that patients suspected of having high blood pressure will get another check at home because of fears that nerves from being at a GP surgery may be leading to too many people being diagnosed.

It says so-called white coat hypertension affects a quarter of all people.

But the latest research suggests that the phenomenon may be more common and is leading some people to have aggressive medical treatment that they may not actually need.

Resistant hypertension occurs when a patient's blood pressure remains above treatment goals, despite using three different types of drugs at the same time.

It was these patients that the researchers focused on.

They asked the patients to wear a portable "ambulatory" monitoring device that takes blood pressure readings every 20 minutes day and night.

This revealed only 63% had true resistant hypertension. These tended to be patients who either smoked or had diabetes or a heart condition.

GP referral time 'variations' revealed by King's Fund

Some patients wait far longer than others for referrals to hospital, an independent inquiry into the quality of GP practices in England has found.

The report for the King's Fund think tank found this was due to variations in the performance of doctors.

It also called for doctors to be more open to comparing performance with their peers, but added the majority of services were good.

Doctors' leaders said GPs were always willing to look at ways of improving.

Social care 'facing funding gap of over £1bn'

Social care is facing a funding gap of more than £1bn by 2014 in England - a situation which would have consequences for the NHS, a leading think-tank says.

The King's Fund analysis predicted councils would struggle to protect home help and care home places as they come to terms with funding cuts.

The report said if this happened there could be more admissions to hospital and longer delays in discharging.

But the government said it did not believe there would be a funding gap.

The Department of Health has earmarked more money for social care.

By 2014 there will be an extra £1bn made available to local authorities from the NHS budget. The Department of Health allocations to councils are also rising.

However, local authorities also rely on funding from other government departments, which will be cut by 27% over the next four years, as well as the money they can raise from council tax to pay for social care.
