'Higher Risk' of Lung Cancer From Smoking First Thing

Smokers who light up on waking display higher levels of nicotine than those who wait, regardless of the number of cigarettes smoked, US research shows. Scientists measured smokers' levels of cotinine, a by-product of nicotine which has been shown to reflect the risk of developing lung cancer.
Waiting until you had eaten breakfast reduced the amount of this chemical. The team from Penn State College says their study suggests the earlier smokers may need more help to give up. The reasons for the differing levels were unclear, but are thought likely to reflect a more intense way of smoking among those who light up first thing - as their need may be greater than those who can wait. More than 250 healthy people who smoked every day were included in the study, which was published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

'No shows' for appointments are costing the NHS millions

It has been found Between 2007 and 2008 that 6.5 million appointments were missed in the UK, with hospitals losing around £100 per patient in revenue. Clinics are now over-booking patients in anticipation of no shows. It has been found that pPatients who fail to keep hospital appointments cost the NHS more than £600 million a year, enough to run two medium-size hospitals. The Patients Association said missing an appointment was "unforgivable". The Department of Health in England says initiatives such as text message reminders are being rolled out. But Unison said patients were not always to blame as check-ups are often arranged months in advance and easily forgotten. The public service trade union said primary care trusts should find ways of reminding patients of their appointments, which could include text or e-mail alerts.

Boxercise is a fitness class which incorporates a number of boxing moves and techniques, without the physical contact. Boxing fit" It really inspired me," said Leigh. Care Level Worry in Mental Health

A study which was commissioned after two deaths involving Mental Health patients has found that Mental Health Services in Wales have placed some patients and held them in inappropriate institutions. The study found that a lack of beds, escalating costs, poor communication and funding disputes in the service were to blame for these issues. The BBC's Dragon's Eye programme also claimed a bid for more assembly powers over mental health was being held up and the welsh assembly stated they would consider the study before deciding what to do.

Mental health Services fall into three main catagories of High, Medium and Low but some patients being detained under the Mental Health Act should be sent to the appropriate institution. But the study found that a number of welsh patients were being held within the high security institutions who did not require this level of care. The reason for this can be down to delays in moving the patient to lower security institution and because within wales there is no dedicated medium secure institute for the treatment of Personality Disorder.
